The ruby ball cactus, commonly known as moon cactus, is a spliced specimen. The colorful red, orange, or yellow top is Gymnocalyciummihanovichii, a name denoting the flower sprouts bearing no hair or spines. The lower green cactus host portion can be any number of species but is typically a Hylocereus cactus. The key function of the lower cactus is to show the Gymnocalycium at an advantageous height.

Description

These plants hardly last more than a few years, since the upper cutting and the lower rootstock portions grow at dissimilar rates. This can ultimately destroy the graft union between the 2 sections. However, it is not a tough matter to distinct the scion and grafts it onto a new rootstock cactus. The best seasons for planting are spring or summer when faster growth is preferred.
